Vegan Baby Food in India — Organic Purees, Cereals & Porridge Mixes
Reading a baby food label is mostly about what is absent. Indian packaged baby foods are covered by FSSAI regulations that restrict added salt and added sugar for infants under 12 months, but the rules loosen for toddler products, so check the nutrition panel rather than the front of pack. Added sugar should not appear in the ingredient list for a first-food product under any of its names — sucrose, dextrose, maltodextrin, invert syrup or fruit juice concentrate.
For cereals and porridge mixes, look for the grain named specifically (ragi, jowar, bajra, rice, oats) rather than “cereal blend”, and check whether the grain is sprouted or malted — both improve digestibility and iron availability for weaning infants. Single-grain mixes are the usual starting point; multigrain and dal-based blends come later once tolerance is established.
Organic claims should carry an NPOP or India Organic mark to be meaningful. Look also for the FSSAI licence number on pack, the batch code and a clear best-before date; nut-based and millet-based products go rancid faster than rice, so buy smaller packs.
Always introduce one new ingredient at a time and speak to your paediatrician about weaning timing and allergens. Related: Baby Care, Organic Grocery. Vendor certifications are listed on our certifications page.
