Vegan Bags in India — Cork, Jute & Faux Leather
“Vegan leather” covers several very different materials, and the difference matters for how long the bag lasts. PU (polyurethane) is the most common: it looks closest to leather, but cheap PU delaminates and flakes at stress points after a year or two of daily use. Look for a stated backing fabric — PU bonded to cotton or polyester canvas holds up far better than PU on non-woven backing. PVC is best avoided; it is harder to recycle and stiffens with age.
Cork is the most durable plant-based option sold here. It is harvested from bark without felling the tree, is naturally water-resistant, and softens rather than cracks. Jute and cotton canvas are the right choice for grocery and tote use, where breathability matters more than structure. Check the GSM on canvas totes — anything under 8 oz will sag under weight.
Hardware is where most bags fail first. Check that zips are branded (YKK or equivalent), that the lining is stitched rather than glued, and that strap anchors are riveted or bar-tacked. On a shoulder bag, a wide strap distributes load better than a thin one regardless of material quality.
