Glass cleaner is one of the easier household products to switch, because the job is simple: cut light grease and evaporate without leaving a film. Ammonia and synthetic fragrance are not doing much of that work.

What to look for

• Ammonia-free — ammonia is the sharp smell in conventional glass cleaner and a respiratory irritant in enclosed rooms.
• Plant-derived surfactants and alcohol — these are what actually lift grease and speed drying.
• Streak behaviour — most streaking comes from over-spraying and from the cloth, not the cleaner. Use a microfibre or lint-free cotton cloth and work in one direction.
• Refill packs — keep the trigger bottle and buy the concentrate or pouch.
• Surface range — many of these also handle mirrors, screens, tiles and stainless steel, which means one bottle instead of four.

All vegan and cruelty-free. Avoid using any glass cleaner in direct sunlight — it dries before you can wipe it, which is the usual cause of streaks.
