Arappu, Shikakai & Reetha — Natural Hair Wash Powders in India

Traditional Indian herbal hair wash powders — arappu (Albizia amara), shikakai, reetha (soapnut) and amla. These plant powders cleanse using naturally occurring saponins rather than sulphate surfactants, which is why they lather far less than shampoo while still washing the scalp.

What to know before switching

• Expect no lather. Saponins clean without foam. Low foam is not low cleaning.
• Transition period. Scalps used to SLS shampoo often feel greasy or waxy for two to four washes before settling.
• Mixing — make a thin paste with warm water and leave it 5–10 minutes before use. Applying dry powder to hair makes it very difficult to rinse out.
• Rinsing — rinse longer than you think. Powder residue left in the hair is the most common complaint and the easiest to avoid.
• Keep it out of eyes. Reetha and shikakai sting.
• Colour-treated hair — these powders are gentler than clarifying shampoos, but do a strand test first if your colour is fresh.
