Eco-Friendly Floor Cleaners in India — Plant-Based Formulas
Conventional floor cleaners rely on pine oil, benzalkonium chloride or phenolic disinfectants, all of which carry strong fumes and are hard on aquatic life once they reach drains. The alternatives here use plant-derived surfactants and essential oils, and are sold as concentrates, refill pouches and ready-to-use bottles.
How to choose
- Concentrate vs ready-to-use. A concentrate diluted at home ships less water and less plastic. Check the dilution ratio on the label — typical is 10–20 ml per litre.
- Surfactants. Coco glucoside, decyl glucoside and sodium coco-sulfate are plant-derived and readily biodegradable.
- Floor type. Marble, kota and granite are alkaline stones — avoid acidic (vinegar or citric) cleaners, which etch the surface. Vitrified tile and cement handle a wider pH range.
- Pets and children. Pine oil and phenyl are toxic to cats in particular; plant-surfactant cleaners avoid that risk.
- Fragrance load. Lower essential oil percentages suit people with asthma or fragrance sensitivity.
