Vegan Lip Care in India — Balms, Tints & Scrubs

Almost every conventional lip balm is built on beeswax, and many tinted products use carmine, a red pigment made from cochineal insects. The products here replace both. The range covers lip balms, tinted balms, lip butters, sugar scrubs and lip masks.

Reading a lip product label

• Waxes. Candelilla, carnauba and rice bran wax are the plant substitutes for beeswax (listed as cera alba). Candelilla sets harder, so a little goes further.
• Colour. Carmine, CI 75470 and cochineal extract are insect-derived. Beetroot, alkanet root and iron oxides are the plant and mineral options.
• Butters and oils. Shea, cocoa and kokum butter give lasting occlusion; coconut oil alone absorbs quickly and needs reapplying.
• Sun exposure. Lips have very little melanin. A balm with mineral SPF is worth having for outdoor days.
• Ingredients that can sting. Camphor, menthol and high peppermint levels feel cooling but can worsen already chapped lips.
