A sling bag carries its whole load on one strap, so construction matters more here than on a tote. Check where the strap meets the body: riveted or bar-tacked anchors last, glued or single-line-stitched ones fail. An adjustable strap with a metal slider beats a plastic one, and a strap at least 25mm wide will dig in far less on a long day out.

For material, cork is the standout plant-based option — light, water-resistant, and it softens rather than cracks. PU faux leather looks closest to leather but check that it is bonded to a woven backing; unbacked PU flakes at fold points. Waxed canvas and recycled polyester are the practical choices if you commute in the rain.

Think about layout before you buy. A single main compartment is easier to live with than four small ones, but you want at least one zipped internal pocket for a phone and one slim back pocket. If you use it for travel, a zip that faces your body rather than outward is worth having. Measure your phone against the stated pocket size — many slings are sized for older, smaller handsets.
