Animal-derived ingredients that are easy to miss

• Food — honey, ghee and khoya in Indian sweets, casein and whey in "dairy-free" processed foods, gelatin in gummies and capsules, shellac as a glaze on confectionery, and carmine (E120) as a red colour.
• Personal care — beeswax (cera alba) in balms, lanolin from wool grease, keratin and silk amino acids in hair care, squalene where it is shark-derived rather than olive-derived.
• Supplements — gelatin capsules, lanolin-derived vitamin D3, and fish-oil omega-3. Lichen D3 and algal omega-3 are the plant equivalents.
