Organic is one of the few food labels in India with a legal standard behind it. Under NPOP — the National Programme for Organic Production — certified produce is grown without synthetic pesticides, chemical fertilisers or GMOs, and the farm is audited.

What does "organic" legally mean in India?

For food sold domestically, organic claims must be backed by either NPOP third-party certification or a PGS-India group certificate, and carry the Jaivik Bharat mark under FSSAI rules. Produce is grown without synthetic pesticides, chemical fertilisers or GMOs, and the farm is audited. If a pack says organic and names no certifying body, treat it as marketing rather than a verified claim.

What is the Jaivik Bharat mark?

It is the FSSAI's unified organic logo for India, showing that a product meets either NPOP or PGS-India standards. It appears alongside the certifying body's name and a certificate number. Check for that number rather than the logo alone.

Is organic food more nutritious?

The evidence on nutrient content is mixed and differences are usually small. The consistent, well-documented difference is markedly lower synthetic pesticide residue, along with the environmental and soil benefits of the farming method. Buy organic for those reasons rather than expecting a large nutritional gain.

Is organic food automatically vegan?

No. Honey, ghee, milk solids and other animal products can all be certified organic. The two labels answer different questions. Everything in this collection is both organic-sourced and vegan, but that is not true of organic ranges generally.

How should organic grains and flours be stored?

Airtight and cool, and use them faster than conventional equivalents, since they carry no synthetic preservatives. Check the milling or packing date rather than only the expiry — whole grains lose freshness quickly once milled. Millet and nut-based flours have a higher fat content and turn rancid faster than wheat or rice, so refrigerate them once opened.

How are cold-pressed oils different from refined oils?

Cold-pressed oils are extracted by mechanical pressing without heat or chemical solvents, which retains more aroma, flavour and natural antioxidants. "Wood-pressed" and "kachi ghani" describe the pressing method, not a quality grade. Look for a dark or opaque bottle and a stated pressing date, and store away from sunlight.
