Putting a Christmas order together

• Chocolate is the safe gift, but read the sweetener. The dark chocolate here is jaggery-sweetened and dairy-free, so it suits vegan and lactose-intolerant recipients. Cocoa percentages run from 62% to 99% — 70% is the reliable middle ground for most palates.
• Candle wax. Soy and coconut wax are the vegan options; beeswax is not. Check the wick is cotton rather than metal-cored, and trim it to about 5mm before each burn.
• Tea lights in terracotta and metal holders should sit in a cup, not directly on the surface. Never leave a lit candle unattended near paper decorations.
• Order early. Small makers produce festive stock in limited runs and courier networks slow down through late December. Two weeks ahead is realistic.
• Hampers. Combining chocolate, tea and a candle from different vendors means separate dispatches. Building from one or two vendors keeps the parcel together.
