Vegan Beauty Products in India — Cruelty-Free Skincare, Hair & Makeup
"Vegan" and "cruelty-free" are not the same claim. Vegan means no animal-derived ingredients; cruelty-free means no animal testing at any stage, including by third parties or for regulatory approval in export markets. A product can be one without the other. Everything in this range is both.
What to read on the label
- Common animal-derived ingredients to watch for: beeswax (cera alba), lanolin, carmine (CI 75470), shellac, collagen, keratin, squalene from shark liver, and honey. Plant squalane from olive or sugarcane is the vegan substitute.
- Ingredient order. INCI lists run in descending concentration. If a "rose" cream lists rose extract after the fragrance, there is very little of it.
- Actives at usable percentages. Niacinamide 5%, vitamin C 10–20%, salicylic acid 2%. A named percentage tells you far more than "infused with".
- Sunscreen. Look for a stated SPF and PA rating; mineral filters (zinc oxide, titanium dioxide) suit sensitive skin, chemical filters suit oily skin better in Indian humidity.
- Essential oil load. Highly fragranced "natural" products can still irritate. Patch test anything new on the inner forearm for 24 hours.
- Preservatives are necessary in any water-based product. A preservative-free cream in a jar is a spoilage risk, not a benefit.
