Almost every classic Indian mithai is built on khoya, ghee, malai or milk powder. That rules out traditional sweets for anyone vegan or lactose intolerant — which, in India, is a very large number of people. Around 60–70% of Indian adults have some degree of lactose malabsorption.
These five sweets are dairy-free without tasting like substitutes. All are suitable for the Raksha Bandhan thali on Friday, 28 August 2026.
1. Coconut Barfi (Nariyal Barfi)
The easiest dairy swap in Indian sweets — coconut milk does the work khoya usually does.
Ingredients: 2 cups desiccated coconut · 1 cup thick coconut milk · ¾ cup jaggery powder · 4 cardamom pods, ground · 1 tbsp coconut oil · pistachios to garnish
Method: Warm the coconut milk and jaggery until dissolved. Add desiccated coconut and cook on low, stirring, for 10–12 minutes until it pulls away from the pan. Stir in cardamom and coconut oil. Press into a greased tray, garnish with pistachios, cool for 2 hours, cut into diamonds.
2. Vegan Kaju Katli
Traditional kaju katli often contains milk powder. This version does not — cashews alone give it the texture.
Ingredients: 1½ cups raw cashews · ½ cup jaggery or coconut sugar · ¼ cup water · ¼ tsp cardamom powder · 1 tsp coconut oil
Method: Grind cashews to a fine powder — stop before they turn oily. Make a one-string syrup with the jaggery and water. Lower the heat, add cashew powder and cardamom, stir until it forms a soft dough. Knead with coconut oil while warm, roll between parchment sheets to 4 mm, cut into diamonds.
3. Nuts & Dates Laddoo — No Added Sugar
The healthiest of the five, and the fastest.
Ingredients: 1 cup pitted dates · ½ cup almonds · ½ cup cashews · ¼ cup walnuts · 2 tbsp desiccated coconut · ½ tsp cardamom powder
Method: Dry-roast the nuts for 3–4 minutes and coarsely crush them. Blend dates into a paste. Mix everything together, roll into balls, coat in desiccated coconut. Keeps for 10 days in an airtight jar — good for posting to a sibling in another city.
4. Jaggery Atta Halwa
Ingredients: 1 cup whole wheat flour · ¾ cup jaggery · 3 cups water · ½ cup coconut oil or vegan butter · cardamom · almonds and raisins
Method: Dissolve jaggery in hot water and set aside. Roast the flour in coconut oil on low heat for 12–15 minutes until nutty and golden — this step cannot be rushed. Add the jaggery water carefully (it will splutter), stir continuously until it thickens and leaves the pan. Finish with cardamom, almonds and raisins.
5. No-Cook Dark Chocolate Bites
For when you have twenty minutes, not two hours.
Ingredients: 1 bar Anuttama 70% jaggery-sweetened dark chocolate · ½ cup mixed nuts, chopped · 2 tbsp dried cranberries · pinch of sea salt
Method: Melt the chocolate over a double boiler. Stir in nuts and cranberries. Spoon into small moulds or paper cases, sprinkle with sea salt, refrigerate for 30 minutes. Because Anuttama is jaggery-sweetened and dairy-free, the result is vegan without any adjustment.
If You'd Rather Buy Than Cook
August humidity is unkind to homemade mithai in transit. If you are sending sweets to another city, chocolate and snack bars travel far better:

Frequently Asked Questions
Are Indian sweets vegan?
Most are not. Traditional mithai relies on khoya, ghee, paneer or milk powder. Coconut-based sweets, dates-and-nuts laddoos, and jaggery halwa made with oil are naturally dairy-free, and most other sweets can be adapted using coconut milk and coconut oil.
What can I use instead of khoya?
Thick coconut milk reduced on low heat, cashew paste, or a mix of desiccated coconut and coconut milk all work as khoya replacements depending on the sweet.
Is jaggery vegan?
Yes. Jaggery is made by evaporating sugarcane juice or palm sap and involves no animal products — unlike refined white sugar, which is sometimes filtered through bone char.
How long do these sweets keep?
Nuts and dates laddoos keep 10 days in an airtight container. Coconut barfi and kaju katli keep 4–5 days at room temperature, longer refrigerated. Halwa is best eaten within 2 days.
