Plantable Stationery in India — Seed Paper Diaries, Pens & Cards

Plantable stationery is made from recycled paper embedded with seeds. Once the item has served its purpose, it is soaked, sown under a thin layer of soil and grown out rather than binned. What to check before buying

• Which seeds. Tulsi, marigold, tomato, chilli and coriander are the usual varieties in India, and each has a different germination window — tulsi is slow, marigold is quick.
• Paper stock. Handmade recycled cotton rag paper germinates better than coated or glossy paper, which resists water.
• Ink and finish. Look for soy or vegetable-based inks and no lamination; plastic film stops the seed paper from breaking down.
• Seed viability. Seeds lose germination rate with age. Check for a packed or best-before date and store the item dry and out of direct sun.
• Season. Sow after the item is no longer needed — monsoon and post-monsoon give the best strike rate across most of India.
