Vegan Jewellery in India — Cruelty-Free Earrings, Kadas & Anklets

Jewellery is one of the easier categories to shop ethically, because the questions are simple and the answers are checkable. Start with the base metal. Pure copper is used in traditional Indian kadas and anklets and will develop a patina over time — that darkening is normal oxidation, not a defect, and a lemon-and-salt rub restores the shine. Brass and bell metal behave similarly. If you have sensitive skin, look for nickel-free stated explicitly; nickel is the most common cause of contact dermatitis in costume jewellery.

For plated pieces, ask about the plating thickness and base. Thin flash-plating over a mixed alloy will wear through at friction points within months. Anti-tarnish lacquer extends life but wears off with perfume and sweat, so put jewellery on last when dressing.

Several materials here are plant-based or upcycled rather than mined — cork, seed beads, terracotta, upcycled fabric and reclaimed wood. These carry a much lower footprint than new metal, and are worth considering for everyday pieces. Check that adhesives and finishes are stated as vegan; some traditional lacquers and glues use shellac, which is insect-derived.
