Herbal Gulal Online in India — Natural Holi Colours

Conventional Holi gulal is usually a mix of synthetic dyes and an inert filler, and the filler is often silica or industrial powder. Herbal gulal replaces both: plant and mineral colourants on a base of arrowroot, corn starch or rice flour. It rinses out in one or two washes instead of staining skin and hair for a week.

What to check on the pack

• The base. Arrowroot, corn starch, rice flour or maize starch are the good ones. If the base is not named, assume it is silica-based filler.
• The colourant. Turmeric and marigold for yellow, beetroot and hibiscus for pink, indigo for blue, spinach or neem for green, sandalwood for ochre. Named plant sources are a better signal than the words "herbal" or "organic" on the front.
• Fragrance. Ask whether the scent is from essential oils or a synthetic fragrance compound, particularly if anyone playing has sensitive skin.
• Texture. Genuine plant gulal is slightly coarser and less intensely pigmented than synthetic powder. That is normal.
• Patch test on the inner forearm the day before, and oil skin and hair before playing — it makes any colour come off far more easily.
