Natural Holi Colours Online in India — Herbal Gulal

Conventional Holi powder is often industrial dye on a chalk or silica base, which is why it stings eyes and takes days to wash out of hair. Herbal gulal uses food-grade and plant-derived colourants on an arrowroot or cornstarch base instead.

What to check before you buy gulal

• The base powder — arrowroot, cornstarch or rice flour rinses out. Silica, chalk and talc do not, and are the usual cause of skin dryness.
• Colour source — look for named plant or food sources: turmeric for yellow, beetroot for pink, indigo for blue, spinach or henna for green.
• Texture — good gulal is fine and dry, not gritty. Grit means filler, and filler is what scratches skin.
• Fragrance — flower-based scent rather than heavy synthetic perfume, particularly if children are playing.
• Quantity — 100–150g per person for a few hours of play. Pack-of-three and gift-box formats work out cheaper per gram.

Oil your hair and exposed skin with coconut oil before playing — it makes any colour, herbal or not, far easier to wash off. Keep powder away from eyes and do not inhale it.
