Cruelty-Free Self Care Products in India

Cruelty-free means no animal testing at any stage — by the brand, by its suppliers, or by a third party on its behalf. India banned cosmetic animal testing and the import of animal-tested cosmetics in 2014, but ingredients are still tested elsewhere, and a brand that sells into markets requiring pre-market animal testing cannot claim to be cruelty-free. How to verify a cruelty-free claim

• Look for a certifying body — Leaping Bunny, PETA Beauty Without Bunnies or Choose Cruelty Free. A logo drawn in-house by the brand means nothing.
• Cruelty-free is not vegan. Beeswax, honey, lanolin, carmine and silk protein all appear in cruelty-free products. Check the ingredient list too.
• Parent company policy is worth a look if that matters to you.
• Packaging. Refills, bar formats and glass or aluminium containers cut the plastic load far more than a recyclable label does.
• Patch test anything new — plant-derived does not mean non-irritating, and essential oils are among the more common sensitisers.
