Salt lamps are carved from rock salt and lit from within, giving a warm amber glow that works well as bedside or corner lighting. Buy one for the light and the object — the air-purification and ionisation claims often attached to them are not well supported by evidence, and we would rather say so.

What to check

• Weight and size — 2–3 kg suits a bedside table; 5 kg and above for a living room corner. Larger lamps need a higher-wattage bulb to glow properly.
• Bulb — a warm incandescent bulb produces the gentle heat that keeps the salt surface dry. Cool LEDs look flat and do not.
• Base — a solid wood base with a felt pad protects furniture from any moisture.
• Crystal versus moulded — hand-carved lamps have irregular surfaces and colour variation; perfectly uniform shapes are usually moulded from salt powder.

Care

Salt draws moisture from air, so lamps weep in humid weather and during the monsoon. Keep the lamp lit for a few hours daily, wipe it with a dry cloth, and do not place it in a bathroom or near a window that gets rain.
