How to read a snack bar label

• Check what sweetens it. Dates, jaggery and fruit paste all count as sugar in the nutrition panel. Compare total sugar per 100g across bars rather than per bar, since bar weights differ.
• Protein claims. A bar marketed on protein should give you a meaningful amount per serve — read the panel rather than the front of the pack.
• Fibre and nuts. Nut and seed-based bars are more filling than puffed-grain ones at the same calorie count, which matters if the bar is replacing a meal rather than topping one up.
• Allergens. Nut, soy and gluten declarations are listed on the pack; check if you are buying for someone else.
• FSSAI licence number and manufacture date are printed on every pack — worth a look, since small-batch bars carry shorter shelf lives.
