Eco-Friendly Ganesh Idols — Clay & Seed Ganesha

Plaster of Paris idols do not dissolve. They settle at the bottom of lakes and tanks, and the synthetic paints used on them carry heavy metals into the water. Several state pollution control boards now recommend natural clay idols for exactly this reason.

What to check before buying

• Material — natural or river clay (shadu mati) dissolves in water within hours. Plaster of Paris does not.
• Paint — look for natural or water-based colours. Unpainted terracotta is the simplest option.
• Seed idols — hold plant seeds inside the clay, so the idol can be immersed in a bucket or pot at home and the soil used to grow a plant afterwards.
• Size — a smaller idol makes home immersion practical, which avoids the water-body issue entirely.

Idols in this range are handmade by Indian artisans, so small differences in finish and tone between pieces are part of the work rather than defects.
