Diaries are bought once a year and thrown away just as regularly, which makes paper stock and binding worth a moment's thought. What to check before buying

• Recycled content. Look for a stated post-consumer waste percentage. A diary described only as "eco paper" is often made from mill offcuts, which is not the same thing.
• Binding. Thread-stitched and wiro-bound diaries open flat and survive a year of use. Glued perfect binding cracks and sheds pages.
• Cover material. Conventional diaries often use leather or leatherette covers and animal-based glue. Everything here is vegan — cork, cotton canvas, jute and recycled board.
• Seed paper diaries. Ask which seeds are embedded and their germination window; tulsi is slow, marigold and coriander are quick. Sow after the monsoon starts for the best strike rate.
• Paper weight. 80–100 GSM handles fountain and gel ink without bleed-through; recycled paper below 70 GSM will ghost.
• Unbleached or chlorine-free pages avoid the chlorine bleaching stage entirely.
