"We do not inherit the Earth from our ancestors, we borrow it from our children." — Native American Proverb.
Gen-Alpha are children born between 2010 and 2025. A 2019 report found that 67% of 6 to 9 year olds say that saving the planet will be the central mission of their careers. They are uniquely ethically inclined and value-led. Here are parenting ideas if you are raising a Gen-Alpha.
- Don't scare them — Have honest, science-backed conversations. Assure them we are all in this together and instil the idea of 'there is no small act'.
- Outdoor activities — Forests, beaches, local parks, aquariums, groves — let them wander and explore nature on their own.
- Gardening and Composting — The joy of growing something teaches nurture and love for nature. A balcony plant or two is enough to start.
- Reuse, Recycle — Teach simple repair skills. Treat hand-me-downs as family heirlooms. Help children not associate worth with materialism.
- Crafting — Make things from scratch at home. Stuffed toys from old jumpers, picture frames from pistachio shells — resourcefulness matters more than the result.
- Smart purchasing — Give children assistant duties: cloth bags, evaluating necessity vs waste, choosing minimal packaging. They grow to love this role.
- Model the behaviour you expect — Shop from purpose-driven companies. Don't litter. Children imitate more than they listen.
- Participation — Beach cleaning, tree planting, donation drives across India — engage children with peers on environmental action.
As parents, making children environmentally conscious citizens is an added responsibility — but making it part of your lifestyle eases the burden for everyone.
